Congratulations to any of my readers who’ve recently graduated or have a friend or family member who has done so. What an accomplishment…and a relief, right? Give yourself (or your friend or family member) a huge pat on the back but also remember that now the hard work truly begins.
In case you’re wondering why I say that, yes we all know the job market is quite challenging these days but there is another reason. Too often when we reach an educational milestone, we think we’ve got it covered. After all, we think to ourselves…I have the most up-to-date knowledge and technical skills in my industry.
News flash: According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Job Outlook 2011 survey: “…college graduates looking to crack the still-tight job market need to hone their verbal communication skills.”
Verbal communication skills are paramount in the realm of professional skills that employers seek. These translate into being savvy in presentations, networking, teamwork, collaboration, interpersonal dynamics and thinking on your feet.
If it sounds like a tall order, well, that’s because it is. So go out there and get the job you deserve but always remember the 3 Cs: Communicate, Communicate, Communicate.
