Quick reality check: In the last 12 months have you had a physical exam?
In the last 12 months have you had your car inspected?
And finally, in the last 12 months have you had a communication check-up?
So you probably answered YES to the first question, definitely answered YES to the second question and I’m taking a wild guess that you answered NO to the last question. That would say you’re pretty normal; so far so good!
While there are clear advantages to periodically checking our communication, it’s rare that we think about doing so or go so far as to actually do it. How about starting today since you’re reading my post? Let’s make it easy by using the word speak as an acronym (S.P.E.A.K.). Here’s how it works:
S= Are you SUCCINCT?
P=Are you PREPARED?
E=Are you ENGAGING?
A=Do you ARTICULATE?
K=Are you KNOWLEDGEABLE?
Next step is to think about the impact when you answer NO to any of these questions; write down your response because it’s very important as part of your check-up. Next week I recommend that you check back because I’ll provide two solutions for each of these questions and you’ll have a total of 10 tips that you can use immediately.
Until then be sure that that the pulse of your communication is alive and well!
