Did you know…there’s only one you? That’s good news for several reasons such as– no one knows better how to be you than you, being unique is quite valuable, you needn’t expend precious time trying to be someone else other than who you are.
You can probably add to this list, however it offers three solid reasons why being you is worthwhile. At this point you may be wondering the best ways to be you. Here are some ideas to consider:
- In the words of Oscar Wilde…“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” While there is humor in these words, it also tells us that it behooves us to take the necessary time to find out who we are. While this may sound easy, it’s an important goal that is required in order for you to be you.
- Expect conflict. It’s normal to discover that some of your beliefs or values conflict with one another. When you consider that we’re each the product of different experiences, cultures, and influences, it’s not surprising to uncover conflict. In some ways this is what makes each of us interesting, so explore these values carefully. Find which ones make the most sense to you.
- Growth is always welcome. This means that we don’t have to define ourselves by a particular stage or time in our life. Most of us change and evolve based on what we’ve learned.
- Find your strengths. We don’t necessarily know our own strengths so be curious to look for this information and seek feedback from those you trust. You may hear something new that you opt to develop.
As you develop your public speaking skills, it’s essential that you be you. Remember that’s the essence of why others are choosing to listen to you. Therefore, it’s your responsibility to ensure you know who you are and that you understand the value of these three words: you be you.
