Recently, while coaching one of my clients, I learned that my client was exploring other career options. That led into a discussion regarding informational interviews, which is of course tied to public speaking. You may be wondering what the connection is so I’ll tell you what my client and I discussed.
- What is an informational interview? It’s not the same as a job interview. Instead, think of it as an informal conversation that provides insights into a career choice.
- Is timing important? Yes. You want to prepare in advance of your informational interview and be respectful of the person’s time. You may even want to write down your key questions so you stay on topic.
- What are good questions to pose? There are no rules here however you want to gain the most information so think about asking…What was your career trajectory? How would you describe a typical day at work? What skills make you successful? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
- Should you ask for a job? No. Remember that this is not an actual job interview, however you’re making excellent connections that may lead you to your ultimate goal.
- Is follow-up necessary? Yes. My recommendation is that you send your contact a thank you note for the time spent plus any helpful information that was imparted. You may also want to stay in touch with the person from time to time. Be sure you update your contact information since people move around and you want to have a correct address.
Informational interviews are an excellent way to pursue your career choice. They require planning, preparation, and of course—public speaking. They serve as a means of selecting the right career choice but must be done in a thoughtful manner. Being strategic is essential and therefore you want to dress the part, act the part, and sound the part.
