You may be asking yourself why three.

According to the experts at Virtual Speech, “The rule of 3 is based on how our brains function.” To be most memorable to audiences and hold their interest, it’s best to present ideas in units of three. This is not a new concept at all.  If you think about it, we’re all familiar with these patterns; examples are:

-Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness

-Red, White and Blue

-Lights, Camera, Action

The sad truth is that the majority of information you present to an audience is typically forgotten shortly after it’s heard.  That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t speak to audiences.  What it does mean is that you want to make it easier to retain information.

That can be accomplished through a good understanding of how the brain processes information and ensuring that your message is captivating. Your presentation should have a clear beginning, middle and end. The two most important aspects of that structure are the beginning (primacy) and the end (recency). You can also organize your content into segments such as the past, present, and future. Think about focusing on three major points per segment.

The application of this technique has merit in a variety of ways. Think of using the power of 3 in writing, humor, persuasion, and emphasis.  The human brain is constantly evaluating the environment and seeking patterns. The Rule of 3 requires some editing and practice but the results are well worth it.
