Taking a time out is a good strategy, especially when it comes to handling hecklers.
As a public speaker, there are many challenges with which we’re all familiar. One of those challenges is knowing how to handle hecklers. My hope is that you don’t encounter this but if you do or if you know someone who has dealt with being heckled…here is guidance you may wish to consider.
- Do you know your topic from your and their perspective? It’s not uncommon to speak on subjects that may be controversial to some members of your audience, who may challenge you.
Solution: Not only do you want to be well-versed on your topic but also consider your strategy in presenting it and sharing it with others, based on what you know about your audience (e.g. board members, parents, employees, etc.).
- Do you know the details of the format in which you’ll be presenting?Public meetings have their own forums or way of structuring meetings including the Q&A segment. The more you find out in advance the more confident you’ll feel.
Solution: An example would be if audience members can walk up to a microphone to ask their question vs. being recognized from their seat. The latter can be more comfortable for you so know what to expect or see if there’s a choice.
- Do you know who’ll be the most vocal? Part of your research should include discovering who may oppose you or attempt to discredit you in some way and why.
Solution: Before getting in front of your audience, determine who has historically attended these meetings, if their opinions have been publicly stated or published and what their backgrounds are (e.g. credentials, education, experience).
- Do you know your weak spots? Yes, it’s perfectly normal to have vulnerabilities; we all do.
Solution: Ensure you acknowledge your weak spots in advance so you’re not blindsided by a strong or challenging remark and risk feeling undermined.
In next week’s blog I’ll share specific tips public speakers may use when handling hecklers. I hope you find it very beneficial. Stay tuned or if you wish to have my assistance beforehand, please email me at [email protected] or call 518-664-6004.
