Who negotiates? The real question is who doesn’t negotiate? Most of us negotiate frequently in our personal and professional lives, but may not even realize it. All too often we approach “negotiating” as either a win or lose encounter but that’s not what truly counts. The main aspect and the first nugget of negotiation is communication! My source for this post was by Karrass and here’s what they had to say regarding communication—-First it’s important to understand that when it comes to effective negotiation, how we communicate makes all the difference.
*You want to have your communication be clear, to the point, and easy to understand.
*Be certain to state what you’re seeking as well as what you are prepared to offer in return.
*While it may sound challenging, maintain your cool and strive to always be polite.
*Listen actively to the other party and show sincere interest in what you hear.
*Use consistency in all your forms of communication which includes written, verbal and also non-verbal communication.
*Remain positive, with an open attitude and willingness to clarify or answer an questions that arise. This will assist in elaborating your point of view.
Karrass elaborated by offering additional nuggets about negotiation, which I plan to share in my next podcast which will be scheduled the end of January and available at that time. Please stay tuned and in the meantime feel free to ask me any questions or make comments about negotiation that pertains to you.
Remember to focus on your communication in negotiation because that will go a long way!
