Who doesn’t want to make a positive impression?  The goal in all communication is to make a positive impression because that’s what is most remembered. Think about a job interview, a presentation, or a meeting.  In each instance, it’s imperative to make a positive impression…but how is that done?

Here are twenty essential guidelines to consider when it come to the person or people with whom you’ll meet:

  1. Have you received trusted feedback about your strengths and weaknesses?
  2. Have you arrived early (in anticipation of traffic delays, getting lost, bad weather)?
  3. Do you know the names and titles of the people involved?
  4. Are you cognizant of the time allotted for your interaction?
  5. Are you dressed and groomed appropriately?
  6. Do you eliminate any technological distractions (e.g., your phone)?
  7. Have you done some homework so you’re aware of their needs?
  8. Have you found some areas of commonality?
  9. Are you prepared to engage in some small talk?
  10. Are you expressing interest in others?
  11. Have you written several open-ended questions to keep the conversation flowing?
  12. Do you have extra copies of necessary documents (e.g., resume, references, business cards)?
  13. Do you actively listen to what is being said?
  14. Do you maintain consistent eye-connection?
  15. Are you coming across authentically using a genuine approach?
  16. Do you smile when listening to others?
  17. Are you prepared to take notes to help you retain what you hear?
  18. Do you know how to add value?
  19. Do you answer questions succinctly?
  20. How will you follow-up?

Each of us forms impressions very quickly.  In a matter of seconds, to be exact. Though not always right, everything we do leaves an impression.  The goal is usually to make a positive impression as that will be most memorable. Regardless of whether you’re changing jobs or careers, meeting with potential or existing clients, or serving as a reliable business resource, you need to sell yourself.
