Who doesn’t want to make a positive impression? The goal in all communication is to make a positive impression because that’s what is most remembered. Think about a job interview, a presentation, or a meeting. In each instance, it’s imperative to make a positive impression…but how is that done?
Here are twenty essential guidelines to consider when it come to the person or people with whom you’ll meet:
- Have you received trusted feedback about your strengths and weaknesses?
- Have you arrived early (in anticipation of traffic delays, getting lost, bad weather)?
- Do you know the names and titles of the people involved?
- Are you cognizant of the time allotted for your interaction?
- Are you dressed and groomed appropriately?
- Do you eliminate any technological distractions (e.g., your phone)?
- Have you done some homework so you’re aware of their needs?
- Have you found some areas of commonality?
- Are you prepared to engage in some small talk?
- Are you expressing interest in others?
- Have you written several open-ended questions to keep the conversation flowing?
- Do you have extra copies of necessary documents (e.g., resume, references, business cards)?
- Do you actively listen to what is being said?
- Do you maintain consistent eye-connection?
- Are you coming across authentically using a genuine approach?
- Do you smile when listening to others?
- Are you prepared to take notes to help you retain what you hear?
